MacGregor Sailing Canoe

See the images above of Chris' MacGregor Sailing Canoe. This is a clinker plywood construction designed by Iain Oughtred.

Some words from the builder, Chris, himself:

This is a new build of Iain Oughtred's tribute to the boat made famous by the Scot, John MacGregor in the late 19th Century.

The boat is seen above rigged on the front lawn for the first time 22.9.17.
Still some splicings, whippings, leathering of spars to be completed.

Gaboon 4mm ply planks and deck; Jarrah keel and coaming; Hoop pine keelson; Jarrah/Hoop pine laminated gunwales; Oregon spars.

This construction began a few years ago, but build was interrupted and extended by a couple of health issues and all by the the restoration of the Australian Sailfish dinghy featured above in late 2016.

Canoe details:

  • Length: 4.8 metres
  • Beam: 0.80 metres
  • Draft: 0.08 metres

Chris has now been nominated for the second time to go in the running for the Hal Harpur Award this year!

Below images were taken on the first sea trial at Wentworth Halls Lake - went well. A few minor things to sort out, such as more tension on boom downhauls.
